The rainforest is estimated to be over 135 million years old, and is believed to have once covered much of the Australian continent.
The rainforest is home to an incredible array of plant and animal species, many of which are found nowhere else in the world. The Wet Tropics region is home to more than 3,000 plant species, including ancient ferns, towering strangler figs, and the iconic giant Kauri pine. The rainforest is also home to more than 400 bird species, including the endangered Southern Cassowary, as well as numerous reptiles, amphibians, and insects.
